Hi Rick,
Using PC with XP home edition Ver.2002 w/Service Pack 2
Pentium 4CPU 1.80GHz, 1.79 GHz 256 MB of RAM
HP printer 5650
When I attempt to print a greeting card I get the following message:
Virtual Memory Minimum is too low.
Your system is low on virtual memory, windows is managing the size of your
virtual memory paging file. During this process, memory requests for some
application may be denied. Three can happen at this point. a) the system
freezes b) anywhere from 20 to 45 minutes the printer will print a card
correctly c) the print is solid black lines.

My Question is - How do I increase the Virtual memory? Do I need to get
more MB's of memory? Should I complain to the Print Shop maker?
Regards,
Pat Miller

see http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpvm.htm
Virtual memory is space reserved on the hard drive for when
the RAM isn't enough to handle the task. It is slower
because it is mechanical read/writes rather than electronic
in/out of RAM.

But yes, you should buy another 256 or even 512 MB.

Hi Pat,

Has the system always down this? Can you also give some specifications on
the motherboard, or provide the manufacturer and model number? Belarc
Advisor can help you gather this information if you are unsure, see

Also, what application software are you using to print the
greeting card? Is it something from HP that you got with
the printer or paper? Is it a "plug-in" to some other
program, such as WORKS or WORD, or is it stand-alone?

Hi Rick,
No not always. Last year for Christmas I got a new Printer HP 5650 and
Software from Broderbund The Print Shop 20 - I have been unable to print
cards because of the memory problem - so finally decided to try to do
something about it. :) Perhaps getting more memory is the answer. If so,
where do I get it and is it easy to install?

I have a Dell Dimensions 8300 - went thru the systems list and could not
spot the motherboard.

If, as you say, your virtual memory is being managed by
Windows, when you see the message, Windows is increasing the
amount of space on the hard drive assigned (set aside) for
virtual memory. It is called virtual memory because it
isn't really memory, it just acts like it is memory. Memory
is RAM, Random Access Memory, the small circuit boards with
about 8 memory chips attached. Real RAM is much faster than
virtual memory, which works at the speed of your hard drive.

HP has a nice new feature on their website www.hp.com in
that they now can scan your computer for needed driver
updates. Go to HP and click on the "software and driver"
link, enter the model number in the search field and you
will find the page that offers the downloads. You'll see a
link for "scan my computer" so just click that. I think
your problem is with the printer drivers and the Printshop
software.

Update the printer drivers and perhaps reinstall the
software.

To answer the question about installing RAM, it is easy to
do. Dell even prints directions in the manual and on-line,
showing you how to open the computer case and insert the
RAM. You can call Dell tech support and confirm the type of
RAM you need or go to www.crucial.com and use the memory
selector. You can buy RAM at all computer stores, and
stores such as Best Buy or Circuit City and office supply
stores such as Office Max or Office Depot.

Dell may have used one 256 MB RAM stick or two 128 MB
sticks, you may have only two slots to add RAM, so you want
to know what you have installed and Bel Arc will tell you
that, then decide whether you want to add more RAM and how
much you want to spend.

You might have problems with the print spooler software or
some other program using a large amount of the computer CPU
cycles, in general 256 MB of RAM functions pretty well if
you are only running a few programs, but 512-1 GB is enough
that virtual memory is not used very much and that makes the
computer faster.

Your welcome. BTW, don't worry about having to understand
everything all at once. If you can read and follow
directions, you can learn. Read the article about Virtual
Memory and other articles about printer problems, printer
installations and general troubleshooting, and soon you'll
be able to do all that you need, at least you'll be better
able to describe your problem.

I got the same notice as Pat did, but I don't know what to think now....
It came up when I was running the Norton AV and playing the solitaire

"stuff"....I only dl'ed the Nortons Firewall & AV, Ad-Aware, Spybot S &
D, Spywareblaster, and WinPatrol. No pictures, no games, no music. Only
what I've listed here.
The machine is only 3-4 mo. old. I am running WinXP SP1. It as 512MB
Ram, a 120GB HD, and is 2.80GHz. So what could be my problem? Is it
possible the virtual memory shrunk when I didn't need it? I have it set
for the Windows to decide how to adjust it.
And I keep my protection programs updated at least every other day, and
so far they have all come up clean, (except for the usual tracking
cookies, MRU's, and data miners)
I also clear my cookies, temp files, and history at least twice a week.
The only thing I haven't done is pared down my start-up programs because
I'm not sure which ones I need and which ones to disable...
Any help would could give me would be greatly appreciated....Thanks;
Marty

1000 MB is 1 GB (purists will speak about powers of 2
[binary numbers] but just keep the powers of 10 in mind.
For info on virtual memory see

Hello Rick and Hello Pat Miller:

I'm an Ebayer. Today for the 3rd time in about 2-3 weeks the system was
running slow. I thought it might be related to Pic/Scan Program by Ulead360
(larger pics for Ebay recently started using 360. scan twice then merge both
sides of pic, example a record album cover.) The 'you are running low on
virtual memory window came up. window also reads it will do what it must.
ebaying was really getting slow (I'm XP Pro w/Cable Modem thus always really
fast until recently, sluggish getting worse.) I finished my listing signed
off, went off line checked help and virtual memory. I did try Support
recommendation: enter Computer Management file thru their window or my
control panel. I was careful to read all. Bottom-line: reads running 672
approx and no more was recommended. I entered here and read Pat Miller's
virtual mem ? I bonded. Please note: my explore tree repeats itself 2, 3,
and 4 times (I've wondered about this); I did immediately turn off my
printer and will go to hp.com for scan and help.....is other advice is
available, thank you, thank you, thank you......Auggie
