A Strange Problem

I have a Dell Dimension 2400 running Windows XP Home Edition SP2. When I
start the system I get a screen asking which OS I want to load. One is XP
Home, and the other is a line of garbled nonsense.

No matter which one I select the results are the same: I get the windows
loading screen with the moving bar, then the screen goes black and the
cursor appears - and that's all. I can move the cursor around the black
screen but nothing more.

The results are the same no matter which startup option I choose - except
that when I choose 'Safe Mode' the cursor appears but I can't move it.

What the heck is going on, and how can I fix it?
 
You may can find your boot.ini file and remove the line with all the garbled
mess then resave it. Make sure to make backup for boot.ini file before
changing it.
