A simple up button for windows explorer please.

While I like the whole address bar thing in windows vista (since it lets me
quickly go to computer and choose a hard drive etc), it would be most
usefull if you included a simple up button in the explorer interface so that
I can easily and quickly just click the up button to get to the parent
directory from where I am.

That would be intuitive.

Just a suggestion for Microsofts consideration.

The explorer toolbar is rubbish and a waste of space. It is suppose to
replace both the toolbar and the common tasks pane in XP, and has the
functionality of neither. It is not customisable and what is and what is
not included in it makes little sense.

But to go up a level you can always use the breadcrumb navigation, which is
nice.

uhm.... but there is.
if youre in a folder, to get to the parent, just click the parent folder in
the address bar... its listed there in "breadcrumb" view

Hell, they have a share and burn button (which im highly unlikely to ever
use) they could easily enough have included a simple up button and for that
matter put the back and forward buttons that appear in the very upper left
corner of the screen down on the toolbar too, would be quicker to get to
imo.

The unintuitive part of the breadcrumb is that it's constantly different,
because the names of the folders are different with each exploration so it's
never consistant, a up arrow button is consistant, you know it will always
take you up one level, since the names of the folders change in the
breadcrumb there is never any consistancy with it, and thus becomes less
intuitive for the end user.

What? You just press on the second to last folder name on the list to go up
one level. Third to last for the second, and so on...

Im apparently not making myself very clear on this.

The names in the breadcrumb change depending on what directory your
visiting, thus there is no consistancy visually to them. A simple up arrow
is consistant visually, it stays the same all the time, it never changes, so
it is very intuitive to use.

Chad, Yes I do realize that there are backwards and forward buttons to be
used, but sometimes I don't want to go "back" but instead want to jump up on
directory, and I may have started on a folder down deep, so there is no back
because I started on a folder that is not root. If there were an up arrow
button it would take me up one level, much like how back would work if I
navigated down.

So basically MS has provided a way to navigate up (by using the back button)
if you started at root and moved down, but they did not provide a simple up
button that will nagivate up levels if you start from somewhere other than
root level.

Anyway, this is purely a suggestion to MS, and is not meant to start a
debate on how a user should or shouldn't use their own computers, and I
suppose the people that never played around with beta or RC versions and
thus are very much used to the simple consistant interface of XP explorer
would find it most usefull to have some consistancy in Vista explorer (like
a simple Up one level button that remains constant visually).

Thanks for trying to provide information though, it is appreciated.

Thank you, I'll write that down until I get used to it.

If you want something consistent, the Backspace key has worked since the
Windows 3.x days.

But doesnt work the way that the ALT and up keys work. Backspace in vista
goes to the last directory that you visited. instead of the true parent
directory of the directory you are in (unless of course the last directory
you visited was the parent directory in which case the back arrow works).

Why has the "Backspace"-Button been replaced?
In the Vista-Explorer "Backspace" and "ALT"-"Left" do the same ...

Everyone - including me - which navigates in the explorer by using the
keyboard - has to get along with this change. If ALT-UP would have worked in
XP the change would be that big.

Im currently working on a XP in the Office, and Vista at home. So I always
have to think about which OS im using, because i must have to press
"Backspace" in XP and "ALT-UP" in Vista to get just one folder up (not to the
last location i went).
That's pretty bad and against all using the keyboard more than the mouse ..

Also i didn't find any way to type a new location into the adressbar of
Explorer without clicking into it. In XP, if the focus is in the tree - i
pressed tab twice, and could type where I wanted to go.

How can I do this in Vista - without using the classic - view?

PS: Who decides such changes? I really don't understand why this has been
changed ...

I do agree completely with you Lakesidezx. I find these 'breadcrumb' quite
frustrating. Often the window is not wide enough to show a decent row of
crumbs, and something as complicated as:

[] > Computer > OS (C:) > Program Files >

in reality simply means:

C:\Program Files

but once you get to this stage, you're really stuck when you want to go to
the parent directory. <Alt-Up> is the only real remaining solution. I do miss
the simple 'up' button in the toolbar very much (I found your posting when I
tried to find where the 'up' button had gone).

Tobias,

In Vista to get to the address bar you need to learn ALT-D. This should
also work in XP, but in XP, I always used CTRL-TAB from anywhere so I need to
learn the new shortcut as well.

Look for Keyboard shortcuts in Vista's Help feature to see all the
shortcuts. It will not tell you what the old versions were and keyboard
enthusiats need to figure out which keys have changed.

Vista has changed the "efficient" keyboard user so much I am looking into
switching OSes. Like the concepts of taking down large corporations, you
need to hit them where it hurts; the pocket book and not the forums. I am
looking into a decent linux alternatve for my company to switch to.

I'm surprised I haven't read any complaints about the change to the folders
column when searching for files. What happened to using F3 to start
searching? Now I need to use my mouse to get to the Live search box. Does
anyone know how to get to the search box via a keyboard shortcut?

I also agree with Lakesidezx.

Did any of you know that you could hold down CTRL and click on the Up folder
to get a new window of the parent directory? I use this A LOT!!! I usually
used this to compare two similar directories. But the nice part was that I
didn't need to type a lot or navigate a lot to get near the location I was
using. So now I need to learn CTRL-N but it doesn't feel the same.

Does anyone know how to turn the breadcrumbs off and only leave the text?

Often I would only replace the text name of one folder and I would navigate
to a completely different folder structure because the sub-folder structe was
the same, now I need to click in a blank spot (really annoying especially
since the size of the blank space changes) or press ALT-D press right arrow
and then hold down the left arrow or press ATL-D and then grab my mouse and
find the location.

Yep ALT-Up is the only way left to navigate to the previous folder without
using the mouse. Anyone come across a way to open the parent folder with a
CTRL-Click type way?

I really wish they included the Up button. I guess that if you like the
mouse then you love the new breadcrumb feature. If you use Explorer via thet
keyboard, then you are hating the new breadcrumb feature. This is natural
beacuse keyboardists find the most efficient way to get somthing done.
Adding more key strokes, key combinations or changing the keys really pisses
us off and make us less efficient.

Did anyone notice if/possibly that ESC does not stop IE from loading a web
page like IR6 did?

Does anyone know how to put the File Menu above the arress bar of Explorer?

Does anyone know how to load the XP Explorer.exe on a Vista machine to get
back the XP functionality? OSes were suppsed to have the ability to change
shells. Does anyone (especially Microsoft) remember that?
