A request for guideance with .pst files

Hello,
My friend has asked me to help him migrate his 2003 Outlook files into 2007.
Unfortunately I thought that importing them was the answer, but with that
not having worked and after reading a lot about this process I should have
made the new account and moved the files into his new Outlook and everyone
would have been happy. I didn't do that so now I have an issue.

What is the easiest way for me to keep his one email address and migrate his
old pst files into the folder. This, according to what I've read would allow
him all of his bells and whistles from before.

Here is what I think I need to do, but please correct me or acknowledge if
it will work.
I will name the old pst files .old, with outlook closed. I put the 2003 pst
files into the outlook folder. When I start up Outlook, I can make the .pst
files the masters and that should make it work. I can then remane the .old
to outlook2.pst and open them as a secondary source, copy the emails that
isn't in the original pst files and then delete the outlook2.pst and
everything will be hunky dory?????

Will this work? What are the references that I need to change for his
calender and contact list to work, and have I forgotten anything.
Your help will be much appreciated

No. You never rename PST files with Outlook closed. You never do any
configuration of data files with Outlook closed or you will corrupt the
profile.
The method to use is posted here daily: Open the PST file you want to use in
Outlook (File > Open > Outlook Data File). Then either reset it to be the
default file for the profile, or copy what you need from it into your
current default.
Take a look at these pages for info on Outlook data backup or transfer:

Outlook is probably the most intolerant program there is when it comes to
data migration. Almost none of the things you do with other programs works
with Outlook because of the unique ways in which it connects to its highly
proprietary data source. Few users get it right the first time, especially
if they rely on instinct. Fortunately, data is rarely if ever lost and
almost all mistakes can be fixed just be creating a new profile.
