A Replacement Windows CD

I was installing Windows XP Home Edition on my older computer and for some
unknown reason the CD drive cracked the Windows CD. Is there some way to
get a replacement CD without paying the full retail cost for a new CD? I
kept the broken CD - will Microsoft be of any help? I replaced the CD drive
so that it wouldn't happen again.

Where did the CD come from? If it was an OEM/bundled CD that came with your
computer, check with the computer mfr. They may sell you a replacement.
If it was a retail copy you purchased, you might get some help from
Microsoft....or you could use a copy of someone else's identical CD, as long
as you're using your own CD key.

If it's a retail version of XP see this link:
How to Replace Lost, Broken, or Missing Microsoft Software or Hardware
http://support.microsoft.com

If an OEM version you need to contact the OEM vendor for help.

You could also copy someone's CD. CD's are not unique within a given type.
Any retail full version XP Pro CD will work with any retail full version XP
Pro product key of the same language. The CD and product key have to match
as to:
Home v. Pro
Retail v. OEM v. Branded OEM v. Volume License
Language
