A program is trying to access e-mail addresses..."

J

John Albus

Since installing the latest security upgrade for Office XP
Professional, when I make any changes in Outlook with my
iPAQ connected (ActiveSync 3.7.1), I get the following
message:

"A program is trying to access e-mail addresses you have
stored in Outlook"

This goes on to ask if I will opt to grant access or not.
This does this with changes to other Outlook functions
other than those having to do with "e-mail addresses"

I have scanned for viruses. I have searched the knowledge
base. Any suggestions?

Thanks, John Albus

Isn't it simply a matter of your pda synching with your workstation or am I
missing something? It seems to me that your pda is simply replicating (or
trying to) the info from your workstation so your data is the same on both.

You shouldn't get that message with AS... do you have any other addins
running?

Outlook 2002 SP3 adds additional properties to the list of those that are
affected by the security features. As a result, one of your add-ins needs
updated to the latest version - antispam add-ins are a common cause
although others are affected by the changes as well. Many add-ins were
updated following the release of Outlook 2003 and should work with SP3, if
not you'll need to contact the vendor for a newer version.

applications known to trigger the warning.

Thanks, it does not mention ActiveSync, but it does help
to know that it is an issue with several programs. I have
been doing some web searches and it looks like there is an
issue with ActiveSync but no solution at this time other
than to put up with it.

There is apparantly an issue with the latest Office update
(SP3 I think) and different programs interacting with
Outlook due to a security "fix". I did a web search and
found that I am not the only one having trouble with
ActiveSync and several other programs.

I went to the site but am not running any of those
programs. Sorry for the basic question, but what is
an "add-in" - programs other than the Microsoft Office
programs?

I do have Spybot Search & Destroy on the computer - it is
the latest version available - I also have Sophos anti-
virus provided by the school computer department.

This problem only occurs when my PDA is hooked up and I
make some change to Outlook (e.g. put in or change a task
or note). The problem is only a few days old - ever since
I installed the SP3(?)Office update (done by the computer
services department).

Thanks, John

Outlook addins - tools, options, other, advanced.. there are two addin
buttons. It sounds like when Active Sync updates Outlook, something is
scanning the items and causes the message. Antispam programs are the biggest
cause... I didn't think S&D does anything with Outlook, but if it does, then
that could be a cause.

Are you sure you have the latest Active Sync version?
