A pair of problems

A couple of quick questions..when Windows starts (XP) I don't get the
startup sound. Sound hardware appears ok and my sound scheme is set up
properly, all files are present and selected. Also, the shutdown sound
will not play either. NVidia SoundStorm as my audio device.
The other problem is in the Add/Remove Programs list, there is a huge
gap about halfway down, so that my list is broken into two. In effect
the window acts like its four times larger than it should be. Any
ideas? This computer had just been "cleaned" of various torjans and
viruses. Thanks in advance...Terry
PS The computer with the sound problem has always been kept "clean"
of malware.
