A New Beginning: What I Need to Start?

I want to transfer soccer games from VHS tapes to my computer.
I want to edit the captured file, probably deleting 90-99% of each tape.
I want to arrange scenes from each capture in the order I need for the
purpose of illustrating live action soccer skills to the kids I coach.
I want to transfer the finished product to VHS tape and to CD.

I have the following equipment:
Panasonic model PV-D734S DVD/VCR Deck;
Gateway 305X Laptop: 40GB HDD, 512MB RAM, CD Burner, DVD Player;
Windows XP Home with MovieMaker2.

Money is a huge problem!

Aside from what I've just told you, I haven't got a clue where to begin
and I will appreciate any help I can get. I have a couple of months to
record games and create teaching tools.
