How to Copy VHS tapes to a DVD or CD?

My computer has a Intel Pentium 4 processor on a ASUS P4P800-E Deluxe
Motherboard, 865PE Chipset, Video Card AGP 8X V.3, 512K DDR RAM

I am running Windows XP2 And MS Office Pro 2003

Can VHS tapes be copied directly into a DVD or CD writer?

Or, does the VHS tape need to be copied into my computer
and then copied from my computer to the DVD or CD.

Do I need a special cable to transfer VHS data into my computer?

Do I need a special program to copy VHS to CD?

What is the best program, the easiest to you, and the less expensive program
for a novice computer person to use to copy from VHS to a DVD or CD?

I will appreciate your recommendations, and your step by step instructions on
how to copy the VHS tapes to a DVD or CD.

Thank You for your willingness to help me.

Your question is way off-topic for this newsgroup.

A simple solution would be to purchase a DVD/CD recorder (cost < $150 USD) These
are designed to make it easy, but will not allow duplicating copy protected
tapes.

You need to understand the different formats, time limits, and video quality of
DVD and CD videos. You also need to know about copy protection of VHS videos.

Start with a Google search for info. Here's one using your question as the
criteria:

I have a digital video camera that I can plug the RCA outputs of my VCR
into and then plug the digital firewire output of the camcorder into my
PC. This works great with most video recording programs as most of
them then allow remote control of the camera via the software. I've
only done about 30 minutes with this method and its a long process but
it does work. I think the first respondents link suggests something
like this. I've always wondered about some of those little boxes for
<$100 you can buy that allow direct video capture to the PC.

But there are re-authoring programs around and video editors and maybe
even movie maker in XP would edit a DVD created by these DVD recorders
that do it on the fly. Not sure of quality though.

I had no problem with quality using my camcorder except that my VHS were
bad to begin with. I did read someplace after I did my work that a
fresh cleaning of the heads was suggested prior to any VCR playing.
That might have helped me, I haven't cleaned mine in years... never maybe.
