A network cable ISNT unplugged....

I've got a cable modem that stopped working today. Just plain
stopped. The cable led remains solid, indicating my cable provider is
not at fault. My PC light however, is totally out. I'm connected via
ethernet. I've swapped cables, but that didn't solve the problem.
I've reseated the card, but that didnt help. The device manager says
everything is running just fine, but it isnt. In the network
connection window it says network cable unplugged. I've got a cnet
pro200wl. I've reloaded drivers, run a diagnostic, etc, and don't
know what else to do. Now I'm connected via USB but want my ethernet
back. Any help? Thanks

The network card might have died.

Yes, it could be the NIC, on the other hand, it could be the NIC in the
cable modem. If you have another computer, or can go to a friend's house,
try it there and see if it can establish a connection (PC LED comes on.) If
so, it's your NIC, if not, it's the modem.

I tried that, but to no avail. Would a NIC need to be replaced even
if it says its good? I'm thinking that is the problem, as I hooked up
a laptop which worked just fine. So I guess it has to be the card. I
have a new one ordered from the indians at dell support, india :(

This is going to sound silly, but go to the CLI window (Start/Run/cmd)
and type:

Ping localhost

If you get any replies back, then you know your computer NIC is
functioning properly. If you get no replies (or it seems the window
it just sitting there, not doing anything) then your computer NIC is
malfunctioning somehow.
