"A Network Cable Is Unplugged" On a Dialup Connection

On a Hewlett-Packard machine running XP Pro, I noticed a light blinking on
the tower the other day and checked on what the problem might be. I found
the "a network cable is unplugged" message in the system tray when I ran my
mouse pointer over the Network Connections icon. For what this is worth,
the red X that is next to the icon has been in the system tray from the day
I set up the computer and I am on a dialup connection. Is this anything I
need to be concerned about? Since this message appeared, my computer seems
to be running slower than usual at some times while at other times, it seems
to be running at normal speed. Thanks for any advice!

If you are using a dialup, then the "Unplugged" is most likely referring to
an "On Board" LAN, which is not being used, but is still enabled in the
BIOS. When booting, enter BIOS (usually by pressing delete, but mfgrs
vary), and go to "Integrated Perif", and Disable LAN which is not being
used. Hope this helps. As far as being slower, this would not have
anything to do with that.
