A network cable is disconnected

Hi.
I have 2 computers at home, both using Windows XP Pro in
portuguese. I've installed 2 SMC network adapters, and
linked them with a crossover cable. I used the windows
configuration program in both machines and everything was
correctly configurated. However i get a error message
saying: "A network cable is disconnected", and i know
that it's connected. A few days ago i managed to put the
hole thing working for about 1 hour, but then everything
went the same. What is the problem, anyone knows??
Thanks in advance for the help.

Make sure that the cable is securely connected to the network adapter
on each computer. It's possible that the cable is defective. Can you
try a different one?

Another possibility is that one of the computers is turning off its
network card to save power. To prevent that, open the Network
Connections folder, right-click the connection that uses the SMC
network adapter, click Properties, and click Configure. Then look for
a Power Management setting or a box that says something like "Allow
the computer to turn off this device to save power".
