1) DUMP and replace Vista's Defrag

I too miss watching those little differently colored boxes moving
around -- very hypnotic

Even when you right click on a drive in Computer and select
Properties>Tools>Defragment, you get the same dumb dialogue
that you get from starting Defrag from the Start menu: Schedule
and Defrag Now followed by that annoying useless twirling thingy.
What drive? What progress? Should I get a snack or read "War
and Peace"?

2) Provide Taskbar Notification Area icons for automatic Indexing
and Defrag and anything else that may be using the HDs

I find it VERY disconcerting watching my HD light flashing for
lengthy periods of time and hearing the HD humming not knowing
what is going on. Virus? Worm? Trojan? Lynn Chaney stealing
my porn?

Besides a balloon message, double clicking the icons could bring
up a dialogue to turn them off or let them sleep and a progress bar,
and a link to help explain what is going on for newbies. During
installation of programs and drivers I am almost always asked to
close other running programs.

If you want to feedback to MSFT on Defrag it always makes sense to feedback
to the people who make it because this is a peer to peer. You may wake up
Jill's message rules, but you have a direct way to tell the MSFT defrag
makers how you really feel. In XP Executive Soft (the company who makes
Diskeeper) made the Defragger, but Vista Defrag was home cookin'.

The idea of doing away with the interface to watch a symbol of what's going
on is to free you up, and to allow it to run in the background.

If you want to tell MSFT how you think Defrag should be designed you can
feedback directly to Georgi Matev the Program Manager for Vista Defrag here:

You can make comments here where Georgi Matev one of the gang of Cfs
Bloggers from MSFT has posted:
http://blogs.technet.com/filecab/archive/2006/10/19/a-quick-note-about-defrag-exe-parameters.aspx

Georgi Matev [MSFT] (Expert): [And Program Manager of the Vista Defrag
Team]:

Q: "Are there plans to build a GUI for the detailed defrag status?
A: Not for Vista. There will be improvements in the defrag engine APIs which
will aloow for much better reporting of status in the future. For Vista all
of the defrag UI is built on top of a scheduled task and the command line."

Georgi Matev [MSFT] (Expert):

Q: "Can we please have some form of GUI to see what it's doing? Moving
little blocks satisfies that need, if even just a little. Please let us see
what's going on!
A: There will be future improvements in this area for future releases of
Windows. For Vista the whole idea is to eliminate the need for users to ever
run defrag explicitly. It is a process that can take a while watching it
move file blocks is not really useful. When done on a schedule defrag will
happen regularly and will have just little chunks of work to do each time
and will be completing much faster so reporting status correctly is not
crucial."

Georgi Matev [MSFT] (Expert):

A: "Good question. As far as the user experience changes are concerned, the
decision to simplify the user interface came as a result of usability
research that we did accross various types of users (advanced to novice).
The results in most cases indicated that people did not have good
understanding of defragmentation and were not using it very often. Because
of this we chose to simplify the UI while leaving control to advanced users
in the command line. For some of the technical changes you can refer to the
blog entry at https://blogs.technet.com/filecab/articles/440717.aspx "

Georgi Matev [MSFT] (Expert):

Q: "Why was the XP style Graphical User Interface dropped? (the before and
after defragmentation look was a good design)
A: You can find a lot of detail about this at the Defrag FAQ"
http://blogs.technet.com/filecab/articles/440717.aspx

1) If you can read any Tolstoy novel in the time it takes any defragger to
defrag you must be one fast reader. You shouldn't be able to read the first
section of the NewYork Times or listen to IMusici's Four Seasons in the time
it takes to defrag your HD and all partitions or watch an excellent graduate
school continuing education program Prison Break, Daybreak, 24, The Unit,
or Desparate Houswives Boot (not Ed Bott) Windows Visduh aka Eva aka Gaby
Solis hacks the reg. These are not your daddy's Scan Disk back in the days
of Windows 9X around the turn of the century.

2) You owe it to yourself to invest the pretty modest amount that Perfect
Disk 8 costs or the soon to be RTM'd Diskeeper 10 and stick with those.
They are considerably better and will pay you back the money you invest many
times over in performance and speed.

Additionally they do boot time defrag of the MFT and Paging File well.

You can and should try both of them easily and neither of the three are
going to interfere with each other.

I would like to extend my sincere sympathy to Laura Bush who chose to wear
the same $8400 Oscar de la Renta red Kevlar dress as 3 other women and was
forced to cut and run screaming the words "rendition" and "Oscar dela Renta"
into her razor cell. "Bushie--can you send de la Renta to Gitmo?"

"We must achieve our objective which is success. If we don't win, we lose.
We are winners. We're in an ideological struggle and that's why our
strategy is to win whatever the hell it is winning means. I refuse to quit
sending other people's children, husbands, wives, and parents to be blown
up. Condi--I want my Condi."

MS got spooked by the threats of lawsuits and especially the EU's threats and crippled most of its utilities. They should have A/V included also and Defender could do more. Blame it on Bill Clinton's Justice Dept for suing over Internet Explorer.

I totally agree with point two.

I remember a case a few years ago where my hard drive was churning away for
hours. Imaging my surprise when I found that all of the files had been
deleted off of my drives 2-3-4.

Only my system partition was left untouched.

I found that my son had come to visit and had been on Kazaa to download some
songs. Aside from placing me in legal jeopardy - he trashed my computer.

A classic for framing. An MVP saying to Blame anything MSFT does on Clinton
DOJ. I've had one of my main guffaws of this day lol to the 64th frigging
Longhorn Server power.

That's an over the top wacky analysis for a pretty bright OE and Windows
maven. You also didn't follow the ligitagion in that assessment that
occurred after Clinton DOJ was replaced by a systemic bunch of political
Bush rubber stamps who gutted any semblance of the Biil of Rights and are
going to find much of what they've tried to do now overturned by a House and
Senate that has booted their mafia completely out of control of every
committee there, particularly House and Senate Judiciary with their new
chairmen John Conyers and Pat Leahy including the eggregiously stupid law
that DOJ can use heresay testimony and the defense cannot denounced by the
ABA ans the vast majority of constitutional law professors in your country
the U.S.

MSFT first of all gets smacked legally because their law department is lead
by Brad Smith and Nancy Anderson and they litigate with the "we can do
whatever" and assess later mantra. It's arguably the most hemorrhagic
destructive set of litigation efforts in corporate history and it just keeps
on topping itself. The legal fees and fines for the European litigation are
progressing leaps and bounds and the main defeat cvame because MSFT thought
they could get away with complying on their code and had zilch to do with
utilities like Defender, or inclusion of One Care.

It had as much to do with Clinton's DOJ as it had to do with Paris Hilton's
tapes or Lindsay Lohan's binge drinking or Laura Bush's pleas to render
Oscar de la Renta to Gitmo for making four of those hideous Kevlar looking
$8400 red schmatas Laura wore show up at the White House.

Actually, if you take a close look at how this litigation played out and
settled under Judge Kathleen Kotar-Kelly. it was Bush Ashcroft's DOJ and
Bush Gonzales DOJ that game MSFT the cushiest implementation of a settlement
this side of Britney's settlement with Kfed.

Have a nice read Steve--the major result of this litigation was crafted by
Bush DOJ. In fact a considerable amount of time after MSFT successfully
got Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson and Larry Lessing Special Master removed
from the case by the D.C. Circuit on 4/1/98--several years--it was left to
Bush DOJ to shape the actual details that achieved the result. MSFT made
off like gangbusters in that litigation and it was part of the reason that
they hired the scumbag Ralph Reed the closest associate of new inmate Jack
(___)
Abramoff who is looking forward to most of the rest of his prime years in
prison.

Reed was paid $27,000 a month for years until it hit the media. That ended
Reed's career as one of the biggest scumbags to ever be a Redmond MSFT
employee.

Of course Defender could do more and it could have a helluva lot less false
positives and the community could have standardized the nomenclature and
criteria for spyware long ago. Defender has been the slowest work in
progress since elephants embarked on a 22 month gestation for their babies.

Clinton DOJ and the European Union have done nothing to keep MSFT from
embedding One Care's AV code into Vista. What determined this was
greed--they want the money for One Care Live and it's part of the overall
Live strategy that is now being coordinated by new MSFT hire from Ask Jeeves
Steve Berkowitz
Senior Vice President, Online Services Group.
