A message for Windows' UAC feature...!

I turned the User Account Control feature off in my copy of Windows Vista
Business. I can see why Microsoft implemented this, but as an experienced
computer user, I find it more annoying than actually helpful...especially
since it happens around almost every system settings corner in the UI. As an
example, it is beyond me as to just why I should have to grant permission to
simply see the Device Manager...when changing settings in there I could see
reason for requiring confirmation that you really wish to do so.

So I turned it off. Of course, Windows now tells me that I had really better
consider turning UAC on, and it leaves an icon in the system tray to
complain about this.

I would like to get rid of that icon? Short of turning on UAC (which I don't
intend to do), can this be done?

Control Panel > Security Center. On the left side of the window, click on
'Change the way Security center alerts me'...

In Control Panel, open the Security Center. In Tasks, select "Change the way
security center alerts me." Select the bottom option "Don't notify me and
don't display the icon."

Good luck.

Understandable. Yet be aware that defeating it has ramifications that
may not be immediately apparent.

When Vista required me to give it permission to just change the name
of a shortcut on my desktop, that was the final straw for me and I
turned it off too. :) The little red shield with the X doesn't bug
me but it is easy to get rid of in the Control Panel --> Security
Centre.

Do you run without virus protection too? :)
