a growing sluggish excel file

I have an excel file (excel 2002) using several macros.

Every additional data inflates the file with no proportion with the data
added.Its of course very sluggish.

What can I do to compact the file ?

Any advice will be appreciated

There may be too may formats in your sheet.
Select the area without data
goto EDIT-CLEAR-ALL
This will remove the format in unnecessary cells.
