A file created in Word 2003 says it it is not available.

I create a document in Word 2003. I save it. Then when I try to open it (on
the same computer), it says that the file is not available. Everything I
create is lost to me as I cannot open it. Sometimes, I can open it using
Word Pad, but not always.
