Is there a decent guide on the news groups anywhere, or as a word
document?

I would like to create :

a.) A Slim Windows Rid Of All The Junk
b.) a, but make it able to boot from cd.

Are there are guides available, even if it does not apply to the
'slimming down' of windows?

What the junk is depends on what you want the final image to actually be
able to do. Sean Liming's books are quite good for teaching the basics
of XPe, but working out what you can take out without breaking things is
fairly tricky.
