I have 2 questions. I am trying to open a file on a floppy that was saved as a word.doc using Windows ME. I am trying to open the file on a computer that uses XP. The computer does not want to open the disc -- it is telling me that the floppy is not formatted and asking me if I want to format the disk now. Is it possible to open the disc using a different operating system? If I say yes to formatting the disk, won't that erase everything on the disc?

Yes it will.

Try formatting a floppy on XP, then bringing it and the floppy in
question to a Windows 98 or Me machine. Copy the floppy with the
Word file to the one you formatted and then bring it back to the
XP machine to try.

Do not post blatantly untrue remarks like this as though they are
complete, undisputable facts. XP can read floopIES (notice the
correct usage here for more than one floppy) formatted in ME just
fine. They are both formatted using FAT12.
