I don't know if you remember me. I apologize for taking so long to thank you
(new job, etc.)
You all were a huge help to me with my computer problems. With your
information, I was able to use the program you suggested, Richard, and was
able to look up all the items in "msconfig" and see if I needed them. I was
able to cut my startup items IN HALF, and even found a recurring one that was
a magnet for Trojan Horses (cfmon.exe). After some research, I disabled the
command in the language area that it originally started in as a legit file on
Office and ended up being the "favorite gathering place" of Trojan Horses. I
doubt I will ever need any Asian language resources anyway!
Cliff, your suggestions were helpful. Databaseben, thank you so VERY MUCH
for all the information you gave me, as well as the links to the programs
(Computer-RX, CC and NTREGOP). My computer has never run so quickly and
smoothly.
As far as the sloooooow Windows Updates, I guess I can't help it as long as
I have dial-up Internet. But I did change my options to "Notify me before
downloading" (Norton's security software screamed about that but tough!).
This way I can see what the update are for. If they are for a program I
never use, I don't have to bother with them. If they are files I need, when
I'm busy, I download the smaller files first. Then later I download the
large files. I also found out that I could use a little "trick" when the
large downloads "lock up" my computer. Instead of just sitting around
waiting on them, I found that if I brought up Task Master and then just
exited it without doing anything, it freed the lock-up (works about 99% of
the time). I also found that my computer's virtual memory was set at a VERY
small number and I had earlier bought a large amount of additional memory, so
I was able to "boost" up the virtual memory. This also helped with the
lock-ups. Why have a bunch of memory and only use a tiny bit for virtual
memory! I understand the reasoning if someone has a computer with a small
amount of RAM.
Anyway, thanks again! I have learned a ton and fixed a lot of problems with
my computer. I couldn't have done it without you guys! However, I'm now
having a problem with my Windows Media Player 10 that I will start a new post
on. Maybe you can help me with that. Just when I thought I had everything
fixed!!!
