9x/ME programs on 2k. Is it possible?

Hi all, i upgraded all my machines to win 2000 a while ago,
i have recntly found an old CD case full of old win98/95
games that i loved to play and want to play again (Red
Alert, System Shock 2, MechCommander 1). I know they wont
work under 2k as they are designed for the 9x series. Does
anybody know how i can get them running on this machine?
Simple is better as my brother has to use it as well and he
isnt computer literate to a high level (he can still run
rings around my dad). A friend recomended Virtual Machine
to me and stick 98se on, how viable is this? How is
installing 98se on its own partition and doing a OS select
at start up? Anyone got any ideas?

You might try application compatibility mode.

From the "Run" box
regsvr32 %windir%\AppPatch\slayerui.dll
to enable application compatibility mode.

Nope application compatibility mode doesnt work, its only
to help compatability with programs that dont run that well
on 2k. Not programs that dont work on 2k fullstop, ive
tried it. The MS site says its because its missing out vxd
or Dx or kernal stuff :S. Im thinking of having a bottable
ME partition next ot the 2k and just select on start-up
which one to use, but i really dont want to mess about with
drivers (im too lazy) but i will if i have to its easy
enough to do.
