9800 pro and HDTV

Hello group,

I have a decent system:
AMD 64 3000+
1gig pc3200
80 gig sata drive
9800 pro (oem)
Win XP Pro

I have a new 52 in. HDTV with a DVI and composite inputs. I have tried
briefly hooking the pc up to it via the DVI input. It works with mixed
results. I see that I can choose from several output specs via Powerstrip.
Or I can do the same it seems with Ati's display properties. But It seems
that sometimes there is a conflict. For example, powerstrip says that I
cant go up to 1990x1080 which i thought to be 1080i. I am wondering if
there is a conflict between powerstrip and my windows/ati display
properties.

Is it possible that going from pc to hdtv is better via composite input over
dvi? I do have an older 20 in. monitor with a VGA -to- RGB H/V cable.
Could I use the RGB part of that cable for the composite inputs on my hdtv
set? The dvi cable cost a fortune for a quality 12 foot cable.

I dont have my adelphia cable on hdtv yet, I get that in about 2 weeks. I
just wanted to see the best the pc can put out to the hdtv. I have run the
Chimp demo and some screensavers and they look marvelous. But setting the
resolution to anything higher than 800x600 means panning across the tv.
This gets more of a hassle when I go even higher in resolutions. Also, the
quality of picture goes down (grainier/fuzzy) the higher I go. When
checking the properties, the options seem to reflect the correct frequency
(60 hz) that appear to be the 420/720/1080 settings etc... Im just a little
confused at this point.

Anyways, If someone can tell me the settings I should use to acquire the
best picture for a 52 in. HDTV/Monitor (Model: RCA D52W20).

Thanks all,
SL

I use and ATI 9800 with my RCA 50 DLP. I use the DVI connector as my TV is
digital. If you have a tube type rear projection TV set, then I would
suggest the component inputs. You can get a component adapter for the 9800
that will supply 1080i to the TV set. I think ATI charges around $30, but
you can also get them from www.monoprice.com for about half price. The DVI
should also work, you TV set would have to convert the signal back to analog
for the tybe type TV set. I use the DVI cables from monoprice and they work
fine and are very inexpensive, around $10. I have it set on "extend my
desktop" mode with the HDTV set to the left of the computer monitor.

Do not use power strip, get the latest ATI drivers with the Catlylist
Control Center as it has settings to set the resolution you want. I have
mine set for no overscan and it works great.

Don't expect the HDTV set to give better pictures that your computer
monitor, it will not, but for playing games or playing video from the
computer to the HDTV set, it works fine.

You may want to double-check the owner's manual that came with the TV.
I have a 52" DLP Toshiba and it specifically states "Never connect a
PC (personal computer) to this television set."

It doesn't say why or anything like that. I don't have a DVI connector
on mine anyway...it came with the HDMI connector instead. (52HM94 is
the model). I wish I would've known about this before I purchased
it... I would love to play World of Warcraft on it :)
