9800 Pro and Device Manager

Bill Driscoll

Just installed a 9800 pro and noticed that i have 2 entries in my Device
Manager/Display Devices:
Radeon 9800 Pro
Radeon 9800 Pro-Secondary

is this normal? didnt seem to notice it before. The drivers are the same
under properties but the memory address is different on the secondary
one. OK do delete the secondary one??

Does 3d mark install a seconf display driver. I just installed that.

BTW my 3d mark score was 15442, which seems slow compared to other
systems with the same stuff...

Thanks

Hi Bill,

Your monitor probably has two video connectors.

My 9800 Pro has the same entries in device manager. Hard to say if 15442 is
low unless you post your system specs along with it. My Barton 3200 / 1 gig
Dual Channel system does 17,800 at stock core/memory settings. This with
sideband addressing and fast writes disabled.

Such cards can handle two monitors (dual headed) the 'secondary' entry is
for the 2nd video output, this is normal.
As far as the 3dmark score, whats the rest of your system specs?

Thanks for the answer.
The rest of the specs are:
MSI 865G Neo 2 mb w/intel 2.8 (northwood) @ 400fsb
1gb crucial pc2700 ddr ram
80gb western D hd
and the ati 9800pro standard settings 1280x960 85htz, cat 4.5 drivers

nothing has been tweaked/overclocked. just put it together last week. no
freezes, runs steady. over 100fps in nascar2003 online.

Thanks

When you did the benchmark was it at 1280x960? If yes, then your result is
just fine.

That score is fine for 1280x960

Most of the scores at Futuremark are overclocked systems. I get around
17,400-17,500 running at high res with:
Sapphire ATI Radeon PRO 128mb
Abit IC7Max3
P4-3.0C
512MB Geil PC-4000 DDR
WD Raptor 36GB Sata Drive boot drive
WD 80GB Pata storage drive
Antec True 480 PS
Windows XP Pro, DX 8.1

I have had the two ATI boards in device manager since the fresh insall of XP
Pro in March of this year. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I haven't made the jump to Direct X 9 yet. And this system is running
stock, no overclocking yet.

Yep, Perfectly Normal, Perfectly Healthy. It's a product of it's dual
monitor capabilities.

You should start drinking prune juice and KY jelly cocktails right now,
that will make things a lot smoother.
