98 upgrade to xp

upgraded 98 to xp. computer now seems to be stuck in a
circle. first says boot in normal/safe/last good conf.
etc. then goes to next screen, says checking disk FAT 32
files. finds no errors, flashes to what looks like a blue
error screen, but so fst can't read it. then shuts down
and repeats this process. what can i do to stop this loop
and correct the problem?? Thanks!!
 
Reinstall Windows 98, you will likely have to format to do this, after
installation, while at the 98 desktop, place the XP CD in the drive, when
the setup screen appears, select "Check System Compatibility." The report
it generates may give a clue as to the source of the issue.
