9700 Pro still worth getting?

I want to upgrade from my Nvidia GeForce 4 Ti4200 to something that
can handle DirectX 9. ATI cards seem the only way to go for this. The
9800 is out of my price range, so I'm looking into the 9700 Pro.

Given that it's been out awhile now, is it still a good card to get?
This is the card I'll be using for Half-Life 2, Doom 3, Far Cry, etc.
when they come out and I want to make sure I've got a card that can
handle them.

Thanks for any opinions.

Absolutely. The Radeon 9700 Pro is still the second-fastest card around, and
fully DX9 compliant. If you can get one at a good price, go for it. Another
option is buying a 9700 or 9800 non-pro (not the crippled SE) and
overclocking it to pro speeds.

I had a similar situation when building my new machine. To much coin for a
9800pro, but didn't feel the 9600 was even close in performance. I actually
purchased a used 9700pro off eBay. A little risky, but so far no regrets.
Awesome card! Check out new card review on tomshardware.com or
anandtech.com and they almost always include a 9700 pro for comparison, and
it's only lags slightly behind the 9800, but way better than a9600!

What a dumbass. The 9700 Pro was the Father of DX9 video cards. And
it is still a hardcore motherfucker.

Gee, then I guess they lied on the box of my AIW 9700 Pro when I bought it 6
months ago. Where do these people get their information from?

I think I've seen you post this misinformation a few times. You might want to
double check, since you are wrong. It is/was the first true DirectX9 card.

No doubt, if you can find one, and it is within your budget, grab it up
quickly.

You will be happy with the upgrade - I went from a Ti4400 a few months ago,
and am very pleased.

It was one of the first cards that was developed for DX9, and does it very
well.

I am sorry, but you are incorrect. The 9700 Pro is fully DX9 compatible.
Don't open your mouth unless you know what you are talking about. Maximum
PC rated it as one that was DX9 compatible for Half-Life 2 as well as other
web sites and ATI says it is DX9 compatible.

OK, Dave. Now we know for sure that you're saying this just to piss people
off.

The 9700 Pro most certainly IS fully compatible with DX9. The 9200 most
certainly IS NOT, it supports DX8 only. Like all other DX8 cards, it will
run with DX9 but does not support all the advanced functions.

You've been corrected every time you post these ridiculous statements, and
you've been pointed directly to ATI specs and independent reviews that prove
you wrong.

In fact, I have yet to see a single post from you in this newsgroup that
does not contain major misinformation, despite the fact that people have
politely provided you with the correct specs every single time.

At this point, I can only conclude that you're not just an idiot, you are a
deliberate liar and a troll.

Once again, and for the record, every Radeon since the 9500 has been fully
DX9 compliant -- despite the misinformation DaveW keeps pulling out of his
ass.
