9700 Pro or 9800 non-Pro?

I can get either an ATI (built by) 9700 Pro or ATI (built by) 9800 non-Pro
for the same price.

In benchmarks and games both cards appear to be very close to each other in
performance.

In your opinion which card would be the better choice?

Thanks in advance for any and all responses.

The truth is out there. You just have to look in the right places and ask
the right questions.

It's not as simple a choice as it seems. The ATI 9700 Pro is a known, you
can find benchmarks all over the net.

The 9800 non-pro has a few updated features and may or may not overclock to
Pro speeds.

Bottom line is that the 9800 has the potential for better performance, but
you won't know until you try.

Me, I'm a gambler. YMMV.

On default clock rates they both have allmost same performance. I suggest
that you go with the one that's cheaper.

I'd go with the 9800 non pro because of the improved hardware architecture.
It's the same as the 9800 pro except for slower clocked VPU and memory. And
who knows, you may be able to overclock it. In fact chances are you will be
able to.

I agree and I've been comparing benchmarks, etc. until I was at the
saturation point!

That will depend a lot on the installed ram on the 9800 card.

Fortunately the store that has both cards has an excellent return policy so
I may have to just try one or the other.

Thanks for the input.

I'm not much of a gambler but it almost looks like a flip of a coin to
decide!

That's the problem I'm having.........they're both the same price. If the
either card drops in price again then it will be an easy decision.

Then go for the 9800. It has, theoretically, more advanced pixel shaders,
and stencil buffer optimizations, again theoretically.

Circuit City has the 9800 for $249 this week, if you can find one!

One of my Circuit City stores has at least 3 in stock!

I think $249.99 is the new MSRP since all the local stores, when they have
the 9800 non-Pro in stock, sell them for that price.

Just waiting to see what will be available on Black Friday! ;-)

Thanks.

The Web site shows that as the price, and 349.99 for the Pro. If you go
to the Web site it will tell you which stores near you have stock--all
of them in my area have the non-pro.
