8500LE, best non-DX9 drivers?

I'm using the Catalyst 2.4 drivers that came on the Sapphire installation
CD. No problem with them, they're fine, but I'm wondering if there's
anything better. I downloaded the 4.1 drivers from Sapphire but they require
DirectX 9, which I don't want to install (and don't know if they'd be useful
on the 8500 series anyway). I can't seem to find any information on which
are the latest Catalyst drivers that do NOT require DX9.

You will need DirectX 9 to play any modern game. Just because the 8500 has
no native DX9 hardware support does not mean you cannot play DX9 games, the
latest drivers handle that.

Install DirectX 9b. Install latest drivers from ATI.

DirectX 9 games will run fine with the 8500.

Kent, thanks for the reply.

I have read that some of the older games have problems with DX9, which is
why I wanted first to try a non-DX9-requiring set of drivers. I don't have
any game at the present time which requires a DirectX version later than
8.1, though I don't doubt that most newer games do call for 9. But perhaps I
will do as you suggest anyway. I suppose I can use GoBack (I'm not running
WinXP) or Ghost, then restore if DX9 does give me any trouble.
