8500DV Video Capture questions.

Ok, I bought a Radeon 8500DV a while ago to use as sort of a TiVo
system. I finaly have a dedicated computer set up to do this. It
works great. However, there is the option to record programs in DVD
quality. I think this is MPEG2. In fact, I am pretty sure this is the
case. However, when I go to Nero to make a DVD, I can not just import
the file. I thought the idea of recording directly into MPEG2 was so
that I could just import the file directly into a DVD. Do I need to
use one of those dreadful programs like VideoStudio 6 to make/burn a
DVD? Those programs take forever.

I already have some home movies recorded from my 8500DV in MPEG2 mode
and I am trying to put them on DVD. I am finding this whole thing very
frusterating. There is limited resources online about converting from
MPEG2 to DVD. Thank you.

PS, I tried NeroVision with the MPEG2 DVD thing and I can't even import
my MPEG2 files into the compelation. I have an easier time adding XVID
files. Go figure...

You may want to check everything is the latest version. I'm using MMC 9.02,
Catalyst 5.4 and Nerovision Express 3.1.0.0 and I can turn my MPEG2
files(recorded at the Digiguide/Dabdig combination default - which is not
quite the best MPEG2 setting on MMC) into a DVD with no problems at all.
When I try the MMC "DVD" recording quality Nerovision doesn't like that and
it crashes (which would indicate a NeroVision Express bug). If that's what
you're experiencing, I suggest that you report the bug to Nero (I will do
the same) and hopefully they'll fix it. Note that even once you have a
suitable file to make into a DVD, the process may take a fair while,
depending on your CPU horsepower.

Further to this a quick check on the Nero Website reveals a patch (called
SMCpatch.exe) to resolve issues within NVE3. I've installed it, changed my
MMC map default recording setting to DVD High and back to DVD again rebooted
and tested again - it now works fine at even ATIs best DVD record setting,
so that patch seems to have made a difference. I've no need to send a bug
report anymore - great!

I don't have the latest version of Nero, but don't you need to "author" a
DVD using the MPEG2 file to create the proper files in the VIDEO_TS
directory before you can burn it with Nero?

That's how I normally do it. I use TMPGEnc DVD Author to create the
structure of the DVD (even without menus) and then I can burn it with Nero
by dragging and dropping everything into the VIDEO_TS folder.

Nero 6's Nero Vision Express does this. Mpeg2 in one end, choose the menus
etc and all the VOB files etc within an automatically created VIDEO_TS
folder out the other. There are time limited trial versions available from
www.nero.com if you'd like to test it out.

NeroVision Express does NOT seem to recognize my MPEG2 recordings.

This whole thing is a bit frusterating. Whats the point of recording
in DVD if you can't burn your files easily to DVD?

Nero 6 NeroVision Express2 will.
