Can I play MPEG2 files on topset DVDs?

If I capture video to file in the MPEG2 format. Can I write this file
to a DVD and play it on a top set DVD?

I know that if I render the video to a DVD with a video software
package such as Ulead VideoStudio or MyDVD I could play it on a top
set DVD but in rendering I lose control over the file size and the
quality. I want to avoid having to try different to obtain a desired
combination of quality and time recorded on the DVD.

Please help,
Carlos

Carlos,

A lot of DVD players play SVCD (MPEG-2) files. Some don't. If you
haven't bought one yet, bring an SVCD disk to your favorite store and
check it out, first-hand.

http://www.dvdrhelp.com/dvdplayers.php has a pretty thorough list of
DVCD-compatible set-top DVD players. If yours plays VCDs, but not
SVCDs, the SVCD-VCD "header trick" (de-muliplexing an MPEG-2 file and
then re-multiplexing the file as a VCD) MIGHT work. Might have some
unpleasant green lines if it doesn't. Others in the abm.vcd.d Usenet
group can help you.

Sorry for the typo. DVCD should read SVCD.

First, do you wont CDs or DVDs?
On CD-R you can have VCD (mpeg-1) or SVCD (mpeg-2). You'll need a authoring
tool to make VCD's/SVCD's - like Nero or others.

On DVD you'll have to figure out if your SetTop player can handle DVD+R or
DVD-R or both? As with CD's you need a authoring tool, I use ULead DVD
MovieFactor for this purpose.

Watch so that the NTSC/PAL gets right...

I have had some good results using TMPEGnc DVD Author for MPEG2
files I have captured. The latest version includes a burning plugin ( but
I
havn't tried it yet - I just use Nero) Works quite a lot better that MyDVD
4
in my case.

Luck;
Ken
