What about the cost of the platform that supports it ?

What about it? I'd bet that your average gamer spends more on the
hardware then many offices spend even on their most expensive
workstations, other then some programming shops and graphic arts.

When you're spending $1200-$2000 on the hardware, what's another $200
for the OEM license?
 
After giving up Norton, Panda and McAfee I have downloaded the FREE version
of avast! v4.6 and it works well on my XP Pro x64 Evaluation copy.
