64-bit Windows wide open to viruses

Users of the latest 64-bit version of Microsoft's Windows XP
Professional x64 Edition operating system will not have the option to
install Norton or McAfee antivirus software, vnunet.com can reveal.
Users trying to install the Norton Internet Security 2005 security
suite for consumers on the 64-bit version of Windows see an error
message stating that the product can not be installed.

They are referred to a web page which states: "Symantec currently does
not sell any consumer products that are certified to be compatible
with 64-bit processors and operating systems."

So your point is that certain AV vendors have not readied an x64 product -
but others have.
So in fact if you chose the right vendor and their AV application you are
NOT wide open to virus issues if you run the x64 products.

example of x64 capable AV software

Time to change to another antivirus vendor besides Norton or

ago, anyway.

Too bad its erroneous or old information !
McAfee Enterprise VirusScan v8.0i is for WinXP/64 or Win2003 Server/64 !

64bit Windows is NOT a consumer product it is a corp. product becuase the consumer wil not
afford it. The McAfee AV Enterprise/corp. software is completely different from their
retail software which admittedly has problems.

Actually I think it is much better that those two pieces of crap can't
install on the x64 version - avast works fine and IMHO - is a much better
product. Which makes the subject line BS.

How do you figure? WinXP is, by definition, a consumer product. WinXP
Pro is targeted at businesses, but isn't exclusive to that market.

Actually the x64 version of Windows XP Professional is priced the same as
the x86 version.
Also as an OEM product and the fact that a lot of OEMs are switching to
supplying x64 based systems and they will come preinstalled with Windows XP
Professional x64 Edition this OS will be mainstream and not just a corporate
product.

Really ?

That hasn't been the information thus far. Including the cost of the platform to support
WinXP/64 and Win2003 Server/64.

You can buy a very good 64 bit computer for less than $500. Your arguments
are way off base.
Perhaps it's time to realize that you don't have a clue what you are talking
about, and to gracefully bow out of this thread.

This is not about Itanium but actually about the x64 platform (AMD64 and
Intel with EM64T) - which costs about the same as the 32-bit (x86) CPUs.

You are getting confused between the x64 64-bit CPUs and the Itanium 64-bit
CPUs.
This thread is about x64 which is priced about the same as the 32-bit ones
(see my other reply)
