5900 or ATI X600?

I am looking for a decent all around PCI Express card. Taking into
account, 3d games, photo editing, and general 2d image quality, what
is the best mid priced choice? The 800 and 6800 level cards are out of
my price range, looking to spend $200-$250. Doom III would be better
with the 5900 I am thinking, I have not had an nvidia card for a while
as I was not happy with the 2d image quality, has this improved?

I am looking to replace my 9700 Pro and am looking at the X800. I do a lot
of Photoshop work and have always felt that the ATI cards were better than
the Nvidia ones atleast for photo editing. (Again just MY opinion, though I
have also heard the same opinions on photo sites.) Of course the Matrox line
of video cards have always been considered the best for 2D work, especially
photo editing, but they are not up to ATI and Nvidia for 3D gaming.
