550 relay not permitted

I have Internet connection via Local Area Connection
People who provide this service layed an internet cable to my house and
after establishing Local Area Connection I establish VPN connection to their
server.

On w2k this works OK. On XP Home I can browse the Internet and can receive
emails using Outlook. However every message sent out bounces back saying:
The following recipient could not be reached: 550 relay not permitted
Again, on w2k Outlook sends out messages without problems, so something
wrong should be with my XP settings.

How do I fix that?

Hi -

I'm just thinking out loud and maybe someone with a
little more experience in Microsoft Exchange can weigh in
here, but my guess is that since XP Home can't
participate a a member of a domain and Win2k can, the
Exchange server is bouncing the email because it doesn't
recognize you as a valid user - perhaps to it you look
like a spammer trying to use the Exchange server as a
mail relay.

I'd wait for the Exchange guys to weigh in here, but my
first guess is that until you can successfully
authenticate to the Exchange server it will continue to
bounce your mail. Fixing this may include an upgrade to
XP Professional since it can act as a member of the
domain.

I'd rule out everything else first - make sure the Win2k
and WinXP machines have identical Outlook settings.

Hope this helps -
