550 Permission Denied

Tom Witham

When attempting to publish some changes to my web site,
the following information box comes up and stops the
process:

550 error, about thomas witham.htm, permission denied.

"About Thomas Witham.htm" is the first page of my site
that would be published, there are 30+ pages. It is my
guess that either I am not using the correct user name
and password or the hosting company has changed my user
name or password. Is this true? If not, what does
a "550 error; permission denied error" refer to? And
thanks for your help!

A 550 error is generated by the server
whenever someone tries to access an area
of the server that is " off limits"
I believe the server detects the file name as an attempt
to access a non existent folder in your web.

Here's why:

The first page or Home page of your
site needs to be named index.htm or default.htm
depending upon the server OS, as this is the
page that is automatically opened in the browser
when someone enters www.yoursite.com
you can then link to about thomas witham.htm
from your index.htm page.

Also it is better to replace spaces with underscores in file
names about_thomas_witham.htm as spaces will
cause browser to return: 404 page not found errors.
