550 Authentication turned on in your email client

When sending an email in Outlook XP, I sometimes get this
message:

Your message did not reach some or all of the intended
recipients.

Subject: RE: by the way
Sent: 11/21/2003 5:13 PM

The following recipient(s) could not be reached:

'John Doe' on 11/21/2003 5:13 PM
550 Authentication turned on in your email
client.

That's a weird message. Do you *have* outgoing authentication turned on in
Outlook (on the "Outgoing Server" tab for your mail account)?
