50 % CPU load in PCPitstop?

R

Ritter197

I have used PcPitstop.com to test performance from time to time.

I was getting a perfect mark on Friday past, yet to-day I get 50% CPU load.
Yet I have not loaded any new programs, have always defragged the disks and
use Windows XP, SP1, 2.8 Ghz, 512 MB RAM. Cable modem

Any comments?

Ritter,

I'm assuming you're using a Hyper Threading Proc? If so, that's a reason
for the 50% load, with a non HT proc it would be 100%!

I'd go to PcPitstop.com's website and see if there other reports or problems
like yours there.

HyperThreading should have nothing to do with it. Since you actually
have to be a member or something it looks like, I can't really run it
and see what is up with it, but there are a few things that could affect
it. Installing new programs and defragging the hard drive aren't going
to affect your system load like that. Loading more programs to the
memory may, but not just storing them on the HD. For a good performance
program as well as suggestions on how to improve peformance, check out
SiSoft Sandra 2004 SP2 ;)

I shall go to SiSandra.

I used to have that program a year or so ago.

Still confused since a few days earlier it did not indicate 50% load of CPU
at all.

Thanks in the meantime for advice.

PC Pit Stop www.pcpitstop.com suggests that ALL programs be
off when running tests. But if you have your anti-virus and
a software firewall and some other background programs that
you don't want to take the time to shutdown, you will see a
high CPU load. Also, disk read/write and connection speed
tests will be below actual performance.

It is a very useful site and the test do work. But they may
be more useful as a benchmark to see changes, rather than
actual performance since you are testing the whole Internet
to some degree.

I downloaded and ran SiSandra 2004, SP2b,followed a few suggestions like
turning off background, etc. but PCStop makes no difference, Still the 50 %
CPU load and a total score of 1144, vs. 1604 last Friday.

No Spy or Malware detected by Ad-=aware or Spybot Search and destroy.

All disks defragmented by Diskkeeper Professional version.

I am really confused why this happens.

R

I do have the windows XP firewall installed and also NOD32 Anti Virus
installed and running.
BUT - I had the same programs running last Friday and got a score of 1606,
now I got 1144 and 50% CPU Load. That is what is confusing to me.

Were there performance issues that caused you to do the
testing to begin with?

The Internet is dynamic, one minute it can be fast and the
next it can crawl. If you look on PC Pit Stop's website for
info, you'll see remarks about accuracy, repeatability.

No, from time to time I run it to just make sure all things are working at
optimum performance.

"Optimum" doesn't mean perfect. It means "as well as can be expected."
If you're not seeing any performance degradation, and you're happy with
the way your computer is running, that *is* optimum performance. Stop
beating your head against the wall.

R

Ritter197

But Herb, 50 % CPU load is never Optimum. That is why I am posting and
solicit answers and suggestions.But I understand what you say and mean, of
course.

I always check for Mal- or Spyware with Spybot and Ad-aware. No problems
there.

With 50% CPU usage (what used to be your norm?), I'd go a little deeper than AA
and SSD. They are good tools, but not the only, and not always the best, tools.

You do Update AA and SSD before running, right?

First, try one or more of these free online virus scans, which should complement
your current protection:
<http://www.bitdefender.com/scan/license.php>
<http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan>
<http://www.ravantivirus.com/scan/>
<http://security.symantec.com/ssc/home.asp>
<http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp>

Now check for, and learn to defend against, additional problems - adware,
crapware, spyware - all sap your CPU and resources.

Start by downloading each of the following additional free tools:
CWShredder <http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4086.html>
CoolWWWSearch.SmartSearch (v1/v2) MiniRemoval
<http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4113.html>
HijackThis <http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=3155>
LSP-Fix and WinsockLSPFix <http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm>
Stinger <http://us.mcafee.com/virusInfo/default.asp?id=stinger>

Create a separate folder for HijackThis, such as C:\HijackThis - copy the
downloaded file there. The other downloaded programs can be copied into, and
run from, any convenient folder.

First, run Stinger. Have it remove any problems found.

Next, close all Internet Explorer and Outlook windows, and run
CoolWWWSearch.SmartSearchMiniRemoval, then CWShredder. Have the latter fix all
problems found.

Then, run HijackThis ("Scan"). Do NOT make any changes immediately. Save the
HJT Log.
<http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?showtopic=227>

Finally, have your HJT log interpreted by experts at one or more of the
following security forums (and post a link to your forum posts, here):
Aumha: <http://forum.aumha.org/index.php>
Net-Integration: <http://forums.net-integration.net/>
Spyware Info: <http://forums.spywareinfo.com/>
Spyware Warrior: <http://spywarewarrior.com/index.php>
Tom Coyote: <http://forums.tomcoyote.org/>

If removal of any spyware affects your ability to access the internet (some
spyware builds itself into the network software, and its removal may damage your
network), run LSP-Fix and / or WinsockXPFIx.

Finally, improve your chances for the future.

Harden your browser. There are various websites which will check for
vulnerabilities, here are three which I use.
http://www.jasons-toolbox.com/BrowserSecurity/
http://bcheck.scanit.be/bcheck/
https://testzone.secunia.com/browser_checker/

Block Internet Explorer ActiveX scripting from hostile websites (Restricted
Zone).
<https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/main.htm> (IE-SpyAd)

Block known dangerous scripts from installing.
<http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html>

Block known spyware from installing.
<http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html>

Make sure that the spyware detection / protection products that you use are
reliable:
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm

Harden your operating system. Check at least monthly for security updates.
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

Block possibly dangerous websites with a Hosts file. Three Hosts file sources I
use:
http://www.accs-net.com/hosts/get_hosts.html
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
(The third is included, and updated, with Spybot (see above)).

Maintain your Hosts file (merge / eliminate duplicate entries) with:
eDexter <http://www.accs-net.com/hosts/get_hosts.html>
Hostess <http://accs-net.com/hostess/>

Secure your operating system, and applications. Don't use, or leave activated,
any accounts with names or passwords with trivial (guessable) values. Don't use
an account with administrative authority, except when you're intentionally doing
administrative tasks.

Use common sense. Yours. Don't install software based upon advice from unknown
sources. Don't install free software, without researching it carefully. Don't
open email unless you know who it's from, and how and why it was sent.

Educate yourself. Know what the risks are. Stay informed. Read Usenet, and
various web pages that discuss security problems. Check the logs from the other
layers regularly, look for things that don't belong, and take action when
necessary.

BTW, please don't contribute to the spread and success of email address mining
viruses. Learn to munge your email address properly, to keep yourself a bit
safer when posting to open forums. Protect yourself and the rest of the
internet - read this article.
http://www.mailmsg.com/SPAM_munging.htm

Cheers,
Chuck
Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.

R

Ritter197

I found the culprit!!

It is this file:

tcpsvcs.exe in Windows, System 32 It uses up to 90% of CPU load.

If you rename that file it does not load and PCPitstop goes from 1104 score
to 1640.
