5 minute Applying your personal settings message

I have several XP pro machines that we've connected to a
SBS 2003 domain. The computers start quickly, but after
the user enters the name and password it takes up to 5
minutes with the "Applying your personal settings" message
on the screen. Is there anything that can be done to
optimize that process? Could it have anything to do with
roaming profiles or offline folders? The users never roam
and they don't need to use offline folders.

Check your DNS settings on the client PCs - they should be looking at the
DNS server on your domain to resolve addresses. Slow logins like this are
usually because the clients aren't looking at the domain DNS server or
because the domain DNS server isn't working correctly.

That was it. The firewall/DNS server was offline. It's
much faster now that the DNS server is up.

Now I just need to figure out how to turn off file
syncronising but still keep My Docs on the server.

Glad I was able to help with the DNS issue ... unfortunately I don't use
offline files so someone else will need to chime in on that issue.
