414 error doesn't look like the SRV records exist for my domain

Hi All

I re-built a domain and transplanted the dns from another server on
another site. I did it following the MS procedure but it don't seem
to have worked. Some workstations joined fine but an XP laptop can't
join and gets the error:

The domain name SYD might be a NetBIOS domain name. If this is the
case, verify that the domain name is properly registered with WINS.

If you are certain that the name is not a NetBIOS domain name, then
the following information can help you troubleshoot your DNS
configuration.

The following error occurred when DNS was queried for the service
location (SRV) resource record used to locate a domain controller for
domain SYD:

The error was: "DNS name does not exist."
(error code 0x0000232B RCODE_NAME_ERROR)

The query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.SYD

Common causes of this error include the following:

- The DNS SRV record is not registered in DNS.

- One or more of the following zones do not include delegation to its
child zone:

SYD
.. (the root zone)

OK so it looks like my DNS isn't pointing to the only DC which is
syd-dc1.syd.local

The other issue is we have a win2k pro box that runs as a printserver.
It joined to the domain fine but even if you run to the box logged
into the domain as admin on another box it asks for authentication.

You can ping by friendly name eg. printserver and it works. So it
looks like its the DC registration in the dns that's fried.

How the heck do I fix this? Can you manually edit SRV records - if so
how?

Hmm I've looked up the DNS log on the DC and its also giving me:

Event 414
The DNS server machine currently has no DNS domain name. Its DNS name
is a single label hostname with no domain (example: "host" rather
than "host.microsoft.com").

Which is weird cause under the network identification tab the machine
is showing as: syd-dc1.syd.local with a domain of syd.local

Also get:

event id 4001
The DNS server was unable to open zone 30.168.192.in-addr.arpa in the
Active Directory. This DNS Server is configured to obtain and use
information from the directory for this zone and is unable to load the
zone without it. Check that the Active Directory is functioning
properly and reload the zone. The event data is the error code.

The subnet is 192.168.30.xxx Class C

From the system log I get: id 5782
Dynamic registration or deregistration of one or more DNS records
failed with the following error:
No DNS servers configured for local system.

syd.local is currently a primary - I've tried making it AD - no joy.
The DC has itself set as the primary DNS.

It loks like it is querying for an SRV record in a single label domain name.
Post your unedited ipconfig /all and the domain name from ADU&C, please.
