40 seconds to open dialog box

Hi there.
My PC is 3400 GB, 2 gig ram, XP pro.
My problem is that it take 40 seconds to open the dialog box with right
button on my mouse when I click onto a file. For example I open explorer >
select my directory>select my folder>select the file I want to (copy / delete
/ zip), right button click to open the dialog box then wait 40 secs for the
dialog box open.
I've tried cleanup > defrag to no avail. Been like this for about three
weeks now. Have tried system restore to an earlier date but no difference. I
have notice a c:/windows/system32 icon appear for about 60 seconds when I
boot up. Never seen this appear before. Anyone out there able to help me over
this fraustrating hurdle.

Thankyou Wesley time and your reply.
Seems my problem is network related. I disconected the network and my
problem was solved. Reconnected the network and it was back again.
Now have to pluckup the courage and have a go at the registry editor.
Question is where do I activate the editor?

Once again, thankyou for your time.

When the network is disconnected, right-click and take note of all the
options on a file that hangs.

One of those Context MenuHandlers are network related and when the network
is connected causes the delay.

It then becomes a simple matter of using regedit.exe and see what Context
MenuHandlers are registered for that file association, and see which of
those are network related.

Brian,

To open the Registry Editor...
Click the Start button | Click on Run | Type: regedit | Click OK |

You may want to get RegScanner like Ramesh suggested in the article.
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/regscanner.html

Ramesh suggests that Method 1 is the preferred method.

1. Use RegScanner to search registry values referring to a network path.

Your best bet is to follow the instructions from the article using Method 1.

Tip: do not search HKLM for \\ you may find over 300 entries that have
nothing to do with context menus or network UNC path. The UNC path has
other uses in the registry. Stay in the HKCU key, like Ramesh's picture
here shows...

Read the article very carefully.
Right-click is extremely slow only when Network is enabled

Also see this before you change anything in the registry.
