4.1 Surround problems

I've have a aureal sound card and I plugged my front speakers into the
connector labeled front and the rear speakers into the connector labeled rear
and still only the front speakers work. I can plug the rear into the front
connector and then the rear speakers work and not the front. I've tried using
the surround sound option under Sounds and Audio Devices / Advanced. Why
won't it send power to the rear as well as the front? I don't even care if it
is surround sound. I just want all 4 speakers to be working.

Go to Sound and Audio Devices/Volume Tab/Advanced/Speakers Tab. What is
"Speaker setup" set to??

I have tried every single setting in the list from top to bottom. Right now
it is set on Surround Sound. I have found out that all the speakers work well
outside of Windows. When I'm playing a game, I tell the game I have surround
sound and all four work fine.

So I guess this means that I'll never have four speakers working again inside
Windows.

Does your card have a speaker test programme where each speaker is
highlighted as sound is fed to it, as do Audigy cards? It may also be
worthwhile to check whether there is a checkbox to enable digital
sound. If so make sure it is unchecked and test again.

Have you re-installed the soundcard driver? It may be that it is
corrupted...

As a caveat to my earlier post and re-reading your original post a
little more carefully, if you are able to hear sound through all
speakers when playing either DVD's or games that use surround sound,
then I would assume that the drivers are installed OK.

The problem may be that you are using normal 2-channel stero sound
files in which case they will only be heard through the front speakers
unless you can utilise a surround sound emulator, in which case you
will hear something through all of them.

I'm sorry but i am only familiar with soundblaster cards (which do
come with an emulator) so am unable to help in more detail.

Good Luck....
