Every so often, a file named ~ pops up on my desktop.
It's a data file, but I don't know where it's coming
from. Any ideas?

Greetings --

One of the recent "hotfixes" for OE causes the file to be created
when you update the address book. It's just a duplicate copy of the
address book and can be safely deleted. A permanent fix is in
development.

This is a known bug that was in the April 2003 Cumulative Patch.
Microsoft is aware of it and is working on a fix.

In OE>Tools>Options>Send>Unckeck: Automatically put people I reply to in my
address book. This should stop further ~ files.
