32 bit version XP Physical RAM Limitations

Is there a limit of 512 MB RAM for XP ? I have many problems running a second
stick of 512 for a gig total. I thought I saw that at one time.

My 4GB works just fine (4x1GB sticks) - XP Pro, but XP Home has the same
limit.
The limitation you are speaking was for Win9x OS's, where a tweak was
required to the VCACHE setting when the machine had over 512MB of memory
(can't remember if the tweak was in the "win.ini" or "system.ini" though -
dang this old age) - this limit is non-applicable to NT OS's (NT 4.0, 2k,
XP).
When adding additional memory though, the memory adding must be of the
same type, speed and stepping as the sticks already installed - unlike Win9x
OSs, XP is more - well say - less forgiving in that area, where memory don't
exactly match, where Win9x would say - hey it works - I guess it's good
enough for gov't work, its good enough for me.

THanks for the info!! I figured out the prob. It was my forgetfullness also
that every motherboard is different. I looked up my tyan mb, 2 sticks can be
use in banks 1 and 3 or 2 and 4. but cannot be used in 1 and 2 or 3 and 4.
OOOPSS!!!! I goofed!! Guess it pays to read the book!! Heh heh, again

No. IN Win98/ME there was a setting needed, but XP uses up to 4 GB. It
may be that the RAM modules are badly matched though; Windows has
critical timing loops and that makes it very fussy on the point
