I'm posting on behalf of a friend who is getting a 301 keyboard error
upon booting with the native USB keyboard on her Compaq XP desktop.
She purchased a PS/2 keyboard and it works fine, but she highly
prefers her Compaq USB keyboard and wants to get it working as it did
before. Any troubleshooting assistance will be appreciated. Thanks.

Does another USB keyboard work?

I had planned on doing that as one of my last recourses (the other
being to buy a USB-to-PS/2 adapter), but I was hoping I would find a
solution that didn't involve making a purchase first.

She can borrow a keyboard from a friend. Or she can just buy a cheap USB
keyboard. I have a very nice one from Logitech that cost $14, so this is no
big deal. Another thing to try is to connect the questionable keyboard to a
different computer and see if it works there, but I think swapping out
keyboards on the original machine is a more definitive test.

Thanks. I'll try both your recommendations, and if necessary, will try
the adapter solution too.
