3000 emails In OE

Rainy

a friend of mine has that many emails in her outlook express.. and I was
wondering if there is a way to delete them.. (she wants to save them so she
can look through them) she is a member of several groups and she has let
them build up.. If she goes to where the dbx are stored, and deletes the
inbox, will the inbox rebuild when she clicks on the OE Icon.. thanks Rainy

Rainy:
Guess who?

If she wants to keep them:

1. Open OE
2. Create a new folder Under Local Folders
3. Select all e-mails in Inbox
4. Move e-mails to new folder.

Now Inbox is cleaned and e-mails are archived.

If she doesn't want to keep them:

Delete the inbox.dbx ... OE will recreate.

After doing all this ... open OE and compact all folders.

Rainy:

Each local folder has its own DBX file. The total size of all the folders
is irrelevant. Try, however, to keep each folder under 100 MB to avoid
corruption. Also, don't store messages in the default folders, especially
the Inbox. If OE ever asks to compact messages or folders when you're
closing it, say yes and leave the computer alone until it finishes.
Interrupting compacting can easily cause data loss.

Hi.. I right clicked on all the folders, and clicked on properties, they
don't tell you the size, only how many emails are there, and how many read..
where do I find the count? thanks Rainy

Search for *.dbx files. You'll find one for each OE folder as Frank stated.

Search results will show you file sizes. Or follow the bread crumb trail
from search results to get to the folder that stores the .dbx files for
this user and look at file sizes there.

You can add the Size column (as I have) to each folder, so that it shows how
much each e-mail is taking up. You cannot get a accumulated count, but it
allows you to sort in size order (large->small, small->large), in
determining hog messages.

For a total size of OE:

1. Open Tools | Options, Maintenance Tab, Clean Up Now. This will give you
a grand total for all of OE ... inclusive of newsgroups.

Hi Larry, I have already done that ages ago.. mainly to see how large the
emails are since I send stationery... but I think she needs to learn from
the ground up... Now that is very cool about finding the space after
clicking the clean up now button.. That I didn't know... thanks Rainy

The DBX folders are probably Hidden. You will have to set Search or Windows
Explorer to Show hidden files and folders.
