3 GB RAM Switch in XP Pro

I have just upgraded from 1 GB to 4 GB in a Dell 8400. The System Properties
shows 3.12 GB of RAM. I understand that the system uses part of that and
only shows what is available. But does that look right? Also, when setting
the 3 GB switch in the Boot.ini file is the correct entry 3GB or should it be
4GB if upgrading to four? Any "how to" help or directions to specific
articles would be greatly appreciated.

The correct add to boot.ini is /3GB.

Do a Google search on boot.ini and you will find a number of explanatory
articles.

What the /3GB switch does is to change the relationship between the amount
of user space and the amount of system space. The customary boundaries lies
at 2GB. This is merely a convenience though as the OS does not need 2GB.

There will never be a /4GB switch because that would eliminate the mapping
of the OS into the process space. Without this mapping, no processing of
any kind would be possible.
