2nd hard drive problems

J

Jill

Today I installed a 2nd hard drive (120 GB) on my PC. My
intentions were to use the new (slave) hard drive to
capture and store my video (.avi) files. I am very
disappointed in the quality of the captured video on the
slave hard drive. The video is choppy and there is no
audio at all. I have had no problems capturing and
making movies in MM2 with my original hard drive. I have
a Dell 4600 with 512 RAM, 80GB master hard drive and a
new Western Digital 120GB slave drive. Any help would be
very much appreciated!!! Thanks!

Jill,

Make sure that MM2's temporary storage folder
is on your capture drive.

Tools -> Options -> General -> Temporary Storage

Bob,

I changed the folder under Tools - Options - General -
Temporary Storage to F:\Temp\ but that did not solve the
problem.

Next, I copied the "pft5 tmp -> Disk 1" folders from the
original temporary storage location into F:\Captured
Video\Temp and that did not solve the problem.

I am at a loss right now and would greatly appreciate any
other ideas. Thank you.

Hi Jill

I too have installed a 120 gig HD just for video, but mine works just
fine.

I am wondering how you have connected the drive - is it set as a slave
with your original HD as master, and both on the same IDE line? That is
how mine is set up - and I have a DVD burner and a DVD player on the
other IDE line.

I had a friend approach me recently when she tried to get new CD drives
installed and working - following instructions provided with the new
drive, she set them both to the auto detect mode - but that just didn't
work. When I reset them to master and slave respectively all was well.

Since I am a beginner with Windows I have no idea why this problem
arises, but...

Good luck

David

Make sure that:
DMA is enabled for the IDE channel that the new hard drive is on ( a geek
friend told me that XP apparently turns of DMA after so many
crashes...anyone confirm?)

Make sure that your motherboard is using all the right drivers, that there
are no yellow ! in device manager.

And finally, try capturing with WinDV instead and see if the result is any
better. Google is your friend here!
