2nd hard drive problem

I have win xp pro and 2 hard drives, one is 120gb, the
other is 200gb. My problem is that windows only
recognizes my second drive with 134gb even though Bios
and the device manager see it as a 200gb drive. I've
tried downloading the new service pack and reformatting
the drive but the problem persists. Please help.

Hope this helps - not the easiest info to find out. took
a week of bashing head against wall and reformatting +++

Install the hard drive and set the system BIOS to "Auto-
Detect" the hard disk(s).

Start Windows XP.

Go to the "Control Panel". (in not 'classic view')

Click on "Performance and Maintenance", "Administrative
Tools", "Computer Management", "Storage", "Disk
Management"

In "Disk Management" you will see the active hard disks.
Disk 0 is the Primary drive. Disk 1 and greater are
considered secondary storage.

If the description of Disk 1 is "Not Initialized" then
you must right-click on the "Disk 1" icon and
select "Initialize".

Select the disk to be initialized and select "Continue".

Next, right-click on "Unallocated" region of a basic
disk, and then click "New Partition".

In the "New Partition Wizard", click Next. Select the
type of partition you want and follow all on-screen
instructions

I have a Dell system, XP pro, in which a WD 120 GB drive
was originally supplied and I got a WD 200 GB drive a
month or so ago from Dell, physically installed it, and
had problems similar to yours until I called Western
Digital tech service. They solved the problem in about 2
minutes. It involved formatting the new drive, and one or
two other minor software procedures that I forget. Call
the drive mfr. and they will probably fix you up.

I found this on the Western Digital FAQ list....might help

"Click Start, point to Settings, and click Control Panel.
Double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click
Computer Management. In the console tree under Storage,
click Disk Management. Once Disk Management is open,
follow these steps:

Click Action, and then click Rescan Disks.

Right-click any disk marked Foreign, click Import Foreign
Disks, and then follow the instructions on your screen.
Notes: You must be logged on as an administrator or a
member of the Administrators group in order to complete
this procedure. If your computer is connected to a
network, network policy settings may also prevent you from
completing this procedure"

I didn't do the import stuff - I just right clicked on the
second disk, clicked on Initialise, and thereafter did a
format

Make sure that you dont have a hidden partition on the
drive. Use a drive utility like drive works or partion
commander to check.
