Maxtor 200gb HDD won't show capacity over 128gb

(I've got Win XP Pro w/ service pack 2)

Hi i recently bought a new Maxtor 200gb hard drive (DiamondMax 10 ATA/133)
to be my back-up Slave drive, but Windows only sees it as 128gb. My
motherboard is from 2001 but updated my bios to support 48-bit LBA. My bios
sees the drive as 189gb now, but Windows sees only 128gb. I went to
maxtor.com and did everything it said to do: tried "big drive enabler"
software (said i'm already enabled for 48-bit LBA).

Then i called Maxtor support twice & did everything the guys said on the
phone to do. They said by bios sees the 200gb drive, but windows still only
sees it as 128gb so i should contact Microsoft.

What should i do? Please help.

Be more specific. In you BIOS, when you are sitting there looking at this new drive, what
are the options for its detection? IOW, in MY BIOS you can select auto, LBA, CHS, etc. I
have my > 137G drive set to LBA. Does yours have something similar?

Start > Run > regedit.exe, close any (+) trees and click on MY COMPUTER. Click Edit >
Find then enter "ENABLEBIGLBA" (case doesn't matter) and see if you have a registry entry
present AND the DWORD value for it is '1'.

You do have SP1 and/or SP2 installed on your machine, yes?

Yes, as i said in the top of my post. I have Win XP Pro 2002 w/ Service
Pack 1, then installed SP2 after intalling windows and have run installed all
windows updates.

Because 200Gb in base 10 mathematics is equal to 189Gb in base 2
mathematics.

Base10: 1,000 x 1000 x 1000 = 1,000,000,000 = 1Gb

Base2: 1024 x 1024 x 1024 = 1,073,741,824 = 1GB

Therefore 189 x 1,073,741,824 = 202,937,204,736 = 200Gb (almost)

Just a couple of more questions...

When you installed the Maxtor 200 GB HD, SP2 was already installed on the
OS, right? In other words you didn't first install the HD and then *later*
install SP2, did you?

When you say "Windows sees only 128gb", this is what's shown in Disk
Management (Start > right-click My Computer > Manage > Computer Management >
Disk Management)? Is that right? No "unallocated space" is shown?

Great math. The OP is ok with the 189GB part, it is the 128GB part he/she
is unhappy with <frown>!

- Ok well i have an Asus A7V133 (socket A) motherboard. Updated the BIOS to
the latest one on asus.com which says its supports 48-bit LBA. Like you said
i went into my BIOS Setup & I can select "auto" (which both my primary master
& primary slave HDD are set to now), also can select "usertype HDD", cd-rom,
zip etc. I went to "usertype HDD" and you can select from a list of LBA,
large, normal, match partition table, & manual. I tried putting it on "LBA",
but when i boot my PC i get an error in the BIOS right away saying "Primary
Slave Fails". I tried all the other options expect for "manual" & the BIOS
says the same error. "Auto" is the only option that seems to work.

Under "usertype HDD" where i choose LBA, large, manual etc it says my "CHS
capacity" is 0mb and "max LBA capacity" is 0mb. And it says all my
cylinders, heads, sectors = 0 (unless i choose "manual" and i can set them.
Is this normal?

- I did what you said and yes the entry is there and DWORD value is 1.

I reformatted my C: drive in reinstalled windows like a few weeks ago
shortly before i put in the new HD, so i can't remember if i installed SP2
before or after i put the HD in. Windows Update says SP2 was installed Feb.
28/06. so i dunno.

Yes it says 128gb in Disk Management, all of it unallocated right now. If i
try to make a partition it says the max capacity is 128mb also.

It looks like the best available chipset drivers for you for XP are:

http://downloads.viaarena.com/drivers/4in1/VIA_4in1_443v.zip

(1.05 MB download.) There are other drivers (4.37) at support.asus.com,
under the "utilities" tab rather than the "drivers" one, but they're even
older, and list no support for XP.

I wish that I could tell you that these would fix your problem, but they are
worth a try.

Moonlight:
Frankly, everything would tend to indicate that when you installed the 200
GB HD, SP2 (or SP1) was *not* installed on the OS at that point in time. If
that was indeed the case, i.e., neither SP1 nor SP2 having then been
installed, that would account for the system recognizing only 128 GB
(approx.) of the HD. If & when you subsequently installed (in this case)
SP2, then the full capacity of the drive would be recognized, i.e., 186 GB
(approx.), however, the remaining disk space *above* the 128 GB would be
shown in Disk Management as "unallocated space". And that's not the way it's
reflected in DM, is it, according to your last statement? You're sure that's
the way it's shown in DM - total capacity of 128 GB and *no* additional
unallocated space?

Check the version (5.1.2600.1135 or later) of atapi.sys.
See How to enable 48-bit Logical Block Addressing support for ATAPI
disk drives in Windows XP <http://support.microsoft.com/kb/303013/>.

Anna, well i know that at least SP1 was installed when i installed the HD
because my copy of Win XP comes with SP1. Should i try reinstalling Windows
again just to see if it might fix the problem? It wouldn't be that big of a
deal since i have all my stuff backed up on another partition.

And no, there is no other unallocated space in Disk Management. In the
bottom window of DM that shows all your drives and partitions it says in the
"Disk 1" grey square that the total is 128gb, and then beside it where it
shows any partitions etc. it says 128gb all unallocated and there's no other
partitions or unallocated space anywhere for sure.

I'm by no means a PC expert, especially hardware, so you guys are startig to
sound a little greek to me.

When Mak suggested "Update chipset / controller drivers", what is a
"chipset"? Chipset for what? And by "controller drivers" does he mean the
HD controller on my motherboard? ie: my "Promise Ultra IDE Controller" as it
says in my 'Device Manager' under "SCSI and RAID controllers'.

Are chipset and controller drivers 2 completely different things?

G

Guest

Found this on Asus.com, would this be a good controller driver for my
motherboard?: "Promise Controller UltraATA Driver REV:2.00.0.29
Support 48bit LBA HDD" ?

In 'Device Manager' its says i have a Promise Ultra IDE controller, so would
this Ultra ATA driver work for me?

G

When i search for the atapi.sys file, i get 3 files that pop up on the
search. One is in folder C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$ and it says the
version is 5.1.2600.1106. The other 2 are in folders
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS and C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386 but they
both say the version is 5.1.2600.2180.

In 'Device Manager' when i click on my 'Promise Ultra IDE controller' it
says the driver version is 5.1.2600.1106. What am i to make of this?
