2nd hard drive paritioned different from 1st

I have a second hard drive. My first hard drive is formatted in NTSF, my second one is formated as a active partion. I have data on it, and tiried to partition it with partion magic. What is the deal with the partion? What is a active partion and how do I get rid of it, without losing data??
