2nd hard drive installation

I have taken the hard drive from a dying computer and added it as a slave to
the same IDE chain as the hard drive on a fully functioning computer. I
just want to read the drive and get some files off of it. Only...the fully
functioning computer boots up just fine, but it doesn't read the new hard
drive. Ordinarily, this fully functioning computer has a zip drive where I
have placed this foreign hard drive on the IDE chain. What do I need to do
to make this work? The hard drive that belongs to the functioning computer
is
set on cable select, the imported hard drive has been tried on cable select
and on slave.
