2gb ram displaying as 256mb ram

I recently purchased a HP DV9088EA laptop which came with Media Center.

Needing XP Pro for work use to be able to connect to a domain I
uninstalled media center and eventually managed to get XP Pro on and
re-installed all given drivers and all drivers from the HP drivers site
for this laptop model.

Noticed that it seems to be running quite slow then realised that in
the my computer properties i have:

Computer:
Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 CPU
T5600 @ 1.83 GHz
987 MHz, 256MB of RAM
Physical Address Extension

Obviously, firstly it should have 2GB of RAM and should it not
recognise that this is the Intel Core 2 Duo?

Anyone got any suggestions on how to fix this?

Thanks in advance

Regards
Dave.

This is the Specification from the US HP site:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...81&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=3263339&lang=en

Was the computer bought new or second hand?

How many memory sticks are installed / recognised by the system? Do
the memory sticks show up as DDR2 667 MHz?

This freeware programme is excellent for getting information about
your computer:

Tip: To copy select Report, Quick Report, Plain Text, highlight
required text, right click and select copy. However, whilst this is
fine for posting small amounts of information into newsgroup messages
longer reports will irritate other newsgroup subscribers.

"Eventually managed" to get xp pro installed.....Youve just written youre
mistake.
XP pro from home or MCE must be installed by booting to xp pro cd,select
install xp,new copy,delete the partition,create one,then xp formats & does a
clean installation. You must have installed thru windows explorer..Reinstall
xp.

Andrew, please go away. And stay there. Your brainless blathering
contributes nothing of value to these newsgroups.

See my answer to your identical question in the windowsxp.general
newsgroup.

When posting the same question to more than one newsgroup the best
procedure is to cross-post the message, that is to post the message
once and to list all of the newsgroups in the "To" line. That way
people will know that you have posted this same question to more than
one newsgroup and will only respond to it once.

Good luck

Hi Gerry,

The computer was bought brand new from Comet in the UK.

The memory sticks are definately installed and the BIOS shows 2048MB
Ram installed.

The memory sticks show up as: (for DIMM1 and the same for DIMM2):

Information SPD EEPROM (DIMM 1) :
Manufacturer : Hyundai Electronics
Part Number : HYMP512S64CP8-Y5
Serial Number : Unspecified
Type : DDR2-SDRAM PC2-5300 (333 MHz)
Format : SO-DIMM (67.6 x 3)
Size : 1024 MB (0 rows, 2 banks)

What do you suggest, I have been on to technical support at HP and they
say that the problem is because I have installed the retail version of
windows xp as apposed to the defauls installation of media center so
the new install will not be configured for 2GB but he insists it doesnt
matter and doesnt affect performance as the BIOS shows 2GB even though
windows only shows 256.

Is this right? Surely if windows only sees 256 then it will function as
if there is only 256 (slow when multiple task are happening etc...)

It looks as though you have the memory you paid for. I am switching to
your other thread as you have moved on with your problem.
